Recent single release THE CHOCOLATE BUTTERFLY in June 2006.
Upcoming album release MORGENLANDSTREICHER in autumn 2007.
After a string of widely acclaimed CD releases and 3 years of hosting the BALKAN HOT STEP CLUB NIGHT in Vienna, [dunkelbunt] aka Ulf Lindemann will bring BALKAN HOT STEP to Australia in 2007, delighting Australian audiences with his celebrated feasts of the senses.
Within his BALKAN CLUB NIGHT, [dunkelbunt] presents a wide spectrum of south-eastern European music. Since 2004, his BALKAN HOT STEP programme has been setting audiences ablaze, if not sweaty, and is now considered to be above reproach within the Viennese Balkan scene.
BALKAN HOT STEP is a long running music programme, which is marked by a variety of Live- and Club-sounds. [dunkelbunt] adapts to his audiences musical whims with spontaneity and sensitivity, making his performances a one-of-a-kind experience for all participants. Ulf Lindemann extracts, subjoins and mixes with passion, creating and celebrating feasts for the senses with his varied musical landscapes and his famous oriental spice-mixtures….
The repertoire stretches out from traditional Folklore to his own compositions, electronic interpretations to Balkan music remixes. Although the musical essence rests upon the South-eastern corner of Europe, sounds from all around this planet are to be enjoyed: from Vienna to the Balkans, through Anatolia and the Middle East, India, North Africa, not to mention South America, to Jamaica and straight to the swinging North American Thirties. Like nomadic Eastern gypsies have ever wandered, the audience will be transported across the globe through the BALKAN HOT STEP sound experience.
About the upcoming album MORGENLANDSTREICHER
In the last two years, [dunkelbunt] has recorded the album MORGENLANDSTREICHER, to be proudly released in autumn 2007 on CHAT CHAPEAU. MORGENLANDSTREICHER is a mix of Dub, Reggae, Bossa, Jazz, Electronics, Trip Hop and Break Beats woven with a Balkan twist. Numerous co-operations with both Viennese and international musicians from the Balkan and Klezmer scenes have enriched many of the tracks on the album,
Namely performers like 5’nizza, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Amsterdam Klezmer band, Harry Stojka, Östblocket, MC Killo Killo, Orient Expressions and many more.
MORGENLANDSTREICHER (strider of the orient) is a result of Ulf’s move from Hamburg to Vienna in 2001.
Through this move, initially inspired by the rich electronic music scene in Vienna, he quickly encountered the true Viennese musical diversity and it’s ability to inspire Ulf over past five years. In particular, he was taken in by those areas of traditional music ranging from the Balkan to the Orient. This not only inspired him to rediscover the piano but also to deal with philosophy, ethnology, sociology and the world as sound – as Nada Brahma – which had a strong impact on his life and musical work.
With MORGENLANDSTREICHER, [dunkelbunt] combined the many facets and faces of Southeast European music with various stylistic elements of electronic- and world music. The results of these efforts are fusions such as Balkan-Dub, Balkan-Ragga, Balkan-Bossa, Balkan-TripHop, Balkan-Breaks were created. MORGENLANDSTREICHER marks the dawn of “Balkan Electronics”!
MORGENLANDSTREICHER is more than a mere musical melding of genres. It tells of a one month bicycle trip from Vienna to Istanbul in 2005, which provided the inspiration for the album’s finishing touches.
Travelling through 7 countries during his trip, Ulf got to know not only the lifestyles of locals but also the places where the music originated from. The background sounds, which connect the tracks of the CD, were nearly all recorded on this trip with a small stereo microphone. For example: sunrise and birds in the verdant plains by the Danube (Hungary), evening twilight in the meadows of the Danube (Serbia), on the horse and carriage (Romania), children and the sounds of the waves at the beach on the Black Sea (Bulgaria), at the fish market (Istanbul).
“Some people take pictures, others hold their microphone into the great wide yonder. I am one of the latter. When I listen to the recordings later I can visualize and remember the places and situations far more vividly than simply by looking at a snapshot” says Ulf Lindemann with characteristic lyricism, “but Balkan Hot Step is much more than just a musical symbiosis. For me it’s got something to do with intercultural understanding. Music breaks down barriers between cultures seeking out that common ground which unites all of us, eroding prejudices and stimulating curiosity. In the same way that I connect different styles of music, I would like to connect people and dissolve both musical and national frontiers. After all, we are all just citizens of this world.”
It is no surprise that Vienna in the 21st century has triggered our rich and abundant source of creativity.
A bubbly froth of cultures, an East-West melting pot, Vienna is a metropolis where innovative music fusions are at their thriving best. From Spring 2007, with a new Album CD up his sleeve, [dunkelbunt] is ready to bring his Melange Viennese to Australian (2007/2008) audiences…
