Camino Real is the latest haven in Buscemi's impressive journey through sounds and sources. Dance producer Dirk Swartenbroekx still explores his exquisite worldwide taste for beautiful girls (as collected on his record sleeves) and additional warm music.
The third studio album Camino Real includes all the best Buscemi-ingredients from previous work: stylish house music with a classy french funky touch, intelligent Brazilian flavored beats and deeply skinned Latin vibes.
The real story of this delicious mélange of eclectic music started in the eighties. Dirk Swartenbroekx owns a nearly complete collection of Belgian underground music. He played in several industrial and lo-fi projects at the same time and even had a own record label before he became Buscemi, named after his favorite Hollywood actor who has starred in such films as Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, The Big Lebowski.
But it was Goldie, playing infectious jungle and drum'n'bass at the Blue Note in London, that attracted Dirk into electronic dance music.
Mocha Supremo (1998) was Buscemi's first collection of house tunes, topped with a french fried touch and spiced with jazzy drum'n'bass.
Internationally, deejays Gilles Peterson and Morpheus became interested and recommended his music into new territory.
Middle european nu-jazz and latin grooves then found a perfect marriage on Girl in Havana (2000), the highly acclaimed second album that sold 40.000 copies so far. In the meantime, Buscemi became a resident authority in lounge music. Excellent remixes for Calexico and Suba amongst many others, featured on several succesful compilations. On A Warm Blue Note Session, he immortalized his own selection from Blue Note Records.
Buscemi - usually accompanied by three musicians on stage - headlined Belgiums biggest summerfestivals Werchter and Pukkelpop twice. As dj, Buscemi experienced the world. Dirk ate pasta with Gilles Peterson in Mexico and went out for coffee with Richard Dorfmeister in Vienna. The band toured in Turkey, Spain and South-Africa. Now it's time for the real move. Camino Real becomes Buscemi's most prestigious work to date. The new album features contributions from French bossa diva Isabelle Antena, Spearhead songsmith Michael Franti and Blurt’s cult saxophone player Ted Milton.
French singer Isabelle Antena (Les Disques du Crépuscule) appears on two songs, ,,Sea side'' and ,,Obrigado!'', to be released as a double a-sided single, including a luxuriant remix of ,,Sea side'' by the Italian Nicola Conte and his orchestra. In the summer of 2002 Dirk met Michael Franti of Spearhead at Werchter festival. Nine months later, Franti contributes on the soulful ,,The World Around''.
Brazilian singer Carla Alexandar (Murena records) animated the little dirty urban groove ,,A Té O Fin''. And ,,Ghost Track Man'', the final exotic moment from Camino Real, features veteran saxophone player Ted Milton of Blurt, one of Buscemi's longtime eighties cult heroes.
Camino Real (Royal Way, or The Real Way), named after the prestigious hotel in Acapulco, Mexico, is an adventurous gathering of joyful tunes, mature grooves and tiny songs. Enjoy this special journey.
