Who The Fuck Is iPunx?
It's a typical rainy day in London, when I get to meets iPunx , a mash up duo, who created quote a buzz after releasing two 12" and a couple of underground gigs. Their sound is sort of electro-pogo-rock-house clash, which is much more dancefloor compatible than most of the releases of the overboarding mash up scene. The Hives meet 2Live Crew, My Sherona hooks up with Police's Roxanne and Metallica's Enter Sandman teams up with Tom Stephan or 80ties Disco Trans-X with Jimi Hendrix. Their e.p.s are also played by many key djs in the house and electro scene. There's not much information about these two lads, they perform live in a ninja-look-alike dress and make a secret about their names- so it's a good oppurtunity to get to know these two guys, who mere marked to rival "2 Many Djs" by U.K.s Buzz Charts.
So Who The Fuck Is iPunx?
"Well, we wish we could tell you", they grin. "Unfortunately is that, what we do preatty illegal- like many things in art and music often is. We once tried to get a clearance from different record labels for one of our mash ups. Sting was cool and gave permission for Roxanne but others didn't, so with these copyright laws it's practically impossible to perform this artform legal. So we stick to a small limited amount of white labels and that's it. It would be wicked to make a whole album, but it would take years to clear rights and as mentioned and for most parts not even possible. Actually, our artform is like an hommage to these artists, we are taking our bits and pieces of music from. We are not much different from djs who mix two records, only that we also use computers and use up to five or six songs to make one new. There are kids out there that have bought the original simply because they got to know the song from our vinyl." It is said, that behind iPunx are two wellknown producers, but they keep it cloudy: "We have worked on many succsessfull different projects between Rock and Club. iPunx started out as a pure pleasure thing, and pressed a vinyl and quickly becoming amazed by the strong response and feedback. Without any promotion we got on so many playlists of key djs and dance- and buzz charts, that we decided to take this a little bit further. Proof is, if music contains 100% passion, it' stronger than any concept- or as Pete Tong said:" You can't keep a strong tune down". After the second e..p with this legendary guitar mash with Metallicas "Enter Sandman", we decided to put this thing onstage, mashing things further using guitars and live beats and- if the setting permits- live acoustic drums. "We think, we way, we do this live- it hasn't been quite done before. So there's still a lot of trying out and progressing-which is a big part of the fun. Humor also plays a big role. "Well, if you mash Whamm's Last Christmas with Sex Pistols Arnachy In The Uk, you don't run into danger to take yourself too serious. We like to push things, punk is about breaking the rules, surprising and doing the unexepectd, taking risks, which we do- and we don't have anything to loose!"
With that, they jump to their feet and gone they are- leaving me sitting here and wondering:
"Who The Fuck Was That? Who The Fuck Is iPunx?"
