Onomatologically it seems feasible that the legend of the errant artists’ dynasty Bertholini had its beginnings in the small Hungarian village Átánly a long time ago. Like many of the uncountable puzsta-clans of this time the forefathers of the Great Bertholinis anchored their goods and chattels to ox yokes and fled the inconveniences of the waste land, driven by the hope for an existence less meager in the unknown.
And this is how an unequaled century-spinning ramble began, which led cross Europe and bore little to no artistry yet. How the homeless vagabonds prospered alongside begging, little and not so little trickeries, all kinds of jugglery and prestidigitations – surely always with the intention of mere surviving – is lost in the mists of history. Yet there is no doubt, that after all they did arrive at era defining acrobatics and became The Great Bertholinis.

Indisputably documented is that nature itself probably had more than a marginal part in this development as it decorated the Bertholinis’ family tree yet time after time with precious since most spectacular aformations of every breed whose most celebrated arguably was two-headed Estée Bertholini. That the clan promoted these profitable accumulations of genetic caprices with long-standing intracourse is, in contrast, not overlaid.

After overcoming primary obstacles, the Bertholinis had finally arranged themselves in the new world. Forgotten was the barren land of the home, forgotten the days of meager vegetating of the forefathers in the waste Hungarian land. Throughout the land, the tidings of the motley ado, of rackets and of sensations never happened before were brought and bestowed the errant artists’ prosperity. The Âge d’Or of the Bertholini Family had dawned, and epidemics and famines, prosecution and ostracism, many wars – two world wars included – could not destroy the myth. Yet the last big challenge was too much of a threat, even for The Great Bertholinis: when pictures learned how to fly, the preliminary end of an era had arrived.
